New IR iPod/iPhone dongle for remote

You've heard about it for months, and now the universal remote that looks nothing like a universal remote is finally on sale in 52 nations. Thinkflood's RedEye Mini -- which simply plugs into the headphone jack of your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch -- can now be procured for $49, and when used with the gratis app in the App Store, can control anything in your home entertainment setup that accepts IR commands. ZDNet was fortunate enough to get a little hands-on time with the device, and their early impressions are quite positive. In fact, they recommend skipping the Harmony hoopla and heading right for this if you're already an iDevice owner, and at a buck under a Grant, we certainly aren't in a position to argue.

There is an iPhone app called "Controllr" for $2.99 and is the best app (that I've tried) for Plex. Check it out in the app store and give it a try!

EyeTV streaming to iPhone over 3G

Following up on iCam, there are a lot of people who use EyeTV with their mac mini HTPC. If you own an iPhone, well, now you can access all that over the 3G network. It just keeps getting better :)


EyeTV now offers HTTP Live Video streaming over 3G via Safari

Tired of restrictions about what you can and cannot stream over 3G connections? Elgato, the makers of EyeTV, have introduced a novel solution for their many customers to access live and recorded TV shows using an iPhone and a 3G connection. Their new Live3G web site provides a web app solution for remote video access.

The website uses HTTP live streaming to deliver high quality video to the iPhone's Mobile Safari app. Powered by the EyeTV 3.3 update (free to existing owners of EyeTV software), this technology avoids App Store hassles while providing on-demand video access to your home TV recordings and live programming.

As an added bonus, since Mobile Safari has access to the iPhone's TV Out capability (third-party apps can't use it, but Apple apps can), you can use a component or composite video-out cable to display your streamed video on any convenient TV.

If you're worried about other people gaining access to your library of "Dora The Explorer" episodes, or to personal videos you have digitized using an EyeTV box like the 250 plus, don't. You must authenticate yourself with your My EyeTV credentials before being granted access to any library.

Iphone / Ipod Touch - A Remote Alternative

Ok, so, you either don't have a Harmony, but you do have a iPhone or iPod Touch and want to use it to control Plex and/or the mini? You're in luck, and have quite a few choices.

I haven't started trying these out yet, but do plan on it, just to play around. But, I figured I'd post and compile the major players here so you could see the options and try them out. Feel free to post your thoughts and results in the comments sections for others to see as well. Thanks!
